Planning a hygiene change room: benches, boot storage and PPE dispensers
Turn staff numbers, shift patterns and your footwear-changing procedure into a practical layout and equipment list for the change room.

Map the changeover before choosing equipment
Draw the route from arrival to the work area and the return route at the end of a shift. Mark where staff remove outside footwear, put on work footwear, collect PPE and complete the handwashing or footwear-cleaning steps required by the site procedure.
Use the site-defined clean and dirty zones on the drawing. A bench or divider helps organise the changeover, but the complete arrangement also depends on the route, storage, cleaning and staff procedure.
- Mark doors, door swings, windows, columns, drains and service points.
- Show separate places for personal footwear, work boots, clean PPE and used items.
- Allow for visitors, cleaners and staff whose access needs require an alternative to stepping over a bench.
- Keep the entry, exit and circulation routes clear while people are changing.
Count simultaneous users and stored footwear separately
Bench demand depends on how many people change at once and how long they need. Storage demand depends on the footwear that remains on site, which may include pairs belonging to staff on other shifts.
- Record staff per shift, shift overlap, visitors and the busiest changeover period.
- Count footwear in pairs. One person with one stored pair needs one pair position, not one position for each boot.
- Include separately identified visitor or spare pairs where these are part of your procedure.
- Example: 24 staff pairs kept on site plus four visitor pairs require space for 28 pairs. This is a storage calculation; check the available rack capacities and room dimensions to choose the equipment.
- Do not derive a seating capacity from bench length alone. Agree the space each person needs for the actual changing task.
Choose the bench and divider arrangement
Place the bench where the footwear change is intended to happen, with room to sit, turn and reach footwear on the appropriate side. Choose the divider arrangement to support that movement and the required storage access.
- B38220 is the step-over bench range, with seating and shoe-shelf configurations. Select the length and shelf arrangement offered for the model.
- B38220(SZD) provides a single zone divider. Confirm which side needs access to any shoe storage.
- B38220(S2-112-CZD) is a change-room bench with clean-zone dividers. Check the drawing against the intended boundary and footwear movement.
- Include bench depth, access on both sides, storage reach and cleaning space in the room plan.
Match boot storage to the room
Choose the required pair capacity first, then check the dimensions of that specific rack. Racks with similar outer dimensions can have different stated capacities. Allow room to place and remove boots without obstructing the changeover route.
- Wall-mounted: B38135 uses square tubular boot prongs and integral mounting brackets. Confirm suitable wall support and fixings, mounting height and floor-cleaning access.
- Freestanding: B38136 is a single-sided Eco rack with solid round-bar prongs. Allow floor space for the base and access from the storage side.
- Mobile and lockable: B38140 can be repositioned within the changing area. Plan its normal parking position and movement route, and confirm the locking arrangement and required padlocks.
- Keep clean and used footwear storage consistent with the site procedure. An open storage rack does not provide an active drying or disinfection process.
Choose PPE dispensers by contents and refill access
List the PPE types and sizes that need separate compartments, then check the intended supplies against the dispenser. Compartment count is not a guaranteed stock capacity: packaging and item size affect how much will fit.
- B30840(D) has two compartments and measures 500 mm long x 170 mm wide x 220 mm high.
- B30840(Q) has four compartments and measures 1000 mm long x 170 mm wide x 220 mm high.
- Both have a hinged refill lid and keyhole wall-mounting slots. Allow space above the lid and select suitable wall fixings.
- Use B30847 for boxed gloves where a glove-box holder suits the issue point; confirm the intended box fit.
- Locate dispensers at the point the PPE is needed, with clear labels and access for replenishment. Position them away from likely splashes and used-item collection.
Check the complete layout during a shift change
Walk through the proposed sequence with the people who will use and clean the room. Check entry and exit at the same time, including visitors and overlapping shifts. Adjust the equipment positions before finalising the schedule.
- Can staff reach their footwear and PPE without crossing back through the wrong zone?
- Can doors open and other staff pass while people are seated or waiting?
- Can racks, shelves, the floor and the area behind equipment be cleaned?
- Is there space to replenish PPE and collect used items without obstructing users?
- If boot cleaning is required, are the queue, services and maintenance space included?
Prepare the change-room equipment schedule
Send a dimensioned room plan and a short description of the changeover procedure. Separate the required quantities and configurations so the proposed layout can be checked against the catalogue.
- Staff per shift, overlap, visitor allowance and simultaneous changing demand.
- Total stored boot pairs, their assigned zones and any locking requirement.
- Bench quantities, lengths, divider arrangements and shoe-shelf requirements.
- Rack quantities, pair capacities, wall/floor/mobile preference and mounting constraints.
- PPE types, compartment counts, glove-box sizes and expected refill routine.
- Room dimensions, door positions, service locations, access requirements and delivery date.
